- Part Time Arts and Culture Editor
Description
The Connecticut Mirror (www.CTMirror.org) is a Pulitzer Prize-winning nonprofit, non-partisan local online journalism success story with huge momentum and ambitious growth goals. We cover public policy, government and politics in Connecticut. Our 29-person full-time staff includes 23 journalists and six business team members. Our work is rooted in public service, accountability, and storytelling that reflects the full richness of the state.
We are seeking a part-time Arts & Culture Editor to launch this new area of coverage for the Connecticut Mirror. This role is both editorial and entrepreneurial: the editor will help define the vision, shape the coverage, and establish the voice of arts journalism within a public policy newsroom. Connecticut is home to a vibrant, engaged, and deeply informed arts community and we are expanding our coverage to document it.
Our approach to arts coverage will differ from traditional outlets. We are not focused on reviews, event-driven recaps, or best-of lists. Instead, we aim to produce substantive journalism that both explores and celebrates the arts and examines how the arts function – financially, structurally, and within communities – while also helping readers engage with cultural experiences in real time. This includes reporting on arts funding and government support, the sustainability and growth of cultural institutions, and the broader ecosystem that supports creative work across the state.
A key component of this coverage will be forward-looking storytelling: reported features, interviews, and previews published in advance of performances, exhibitions, and events, giving audiences meaningful context and the opportunity to attend and participate. Our coverage will include visual arts, theater, dance, music, and literature, while remaining open to a broader range of creative expression, including film, digital and new media art, street and urban art, and culinary arts. We are equally committed to covering emerging artists, community-based art, and creative work happening beyond major institutions, ensuring a broader and more inclusive view of the state’s cultural landscape. We will prioritize in-depth conversations with artists, writers, producers, and others working in and around the arts, as well as multimedia content that connect communities more directly to cultural life across the state.
The Arts & Culture Editor will produce original stories while also assigning and editing freelance contributors, helping to build a network of voices that reflect the diversity and depth of Connecticut’s arts community. This is a part-time hybrid position with an annual salary of $70,000, depending on experience.
